Rotten Apple Coaches

Step-by-step checklist for starting, marketing and running successful basketball camps.

Excitement is in the air. As a coach, you’re about to start running your own basketball camps. Your business is legally established, the gymnasium is secured, camp materials are acquired and lesson plans are complete.

Wait a minute! There’s one more thing. You need assistant basketball coaches to help run the camps. Assistant coaches are one the most important ingredients for basketball camps. Without them, your impact and growth will be limited.

But, be careful before hiring. One of the many factors that could derail a basketball camp is a rotten apple coach!

A rotten apple coach has one of the following characteristics:

  1. Unreliable (attendance is spotty & tardiness is happening too much)
  2. Unprofessional (demeanor and/or attire is juvenile)
  3. Side-deal cutters (illegally offer private lessons to campers)

Unfortunately, I’ve had these types of coaches. Over time, either they weeded themselves out, or I’ve asked them to resign.

Hopefully, you’ll never have to worry about dealing with any rotten apple coaches. If you do, cut your losses immediately. No matter how tough it may seem, you’re doing yourself and business a huge favor.
