Growing up, money was always an issue. In my community, it was a scarce resource. I’ve always vowed to myself, I will never allow money to be an issue when I become an adult.
As a kid, I always looked for things to do to earn money. I sold pretzels and lemonade, shoveled snow, cut lawns and obtained a summer job every summer since 9th grade.
For the most part, I was extremely motivated to excel in grade school and college, because I viewed these academy institutions as my ticket to succeed. I never wanted to worry about money. I can recall what my parents said to me repeatedly, “You’re going to the big school (college)! You’re going to change the family tree!”
And generally speaking, through college and my corporate career as a full-time employee, my life has been awesome! I’ve done and experienced things most will never do!
Fast forward to 2008. I’m now a husband and father. I’ve made decisions that stretched us too far financially. Everything is cool from a survival perspective, but if there is one slip with money, my family is in trouble.
Just writing this, I’m experiencing emotions of discuss and disbelief. I vowed this would never happen to me as an adult. If it did, I would feel like I was inadequate as a man!
Luckily for me, my worst fears didn’t come true. Eventually, through a sequence of events I can only attribute to God, I was in the right places at the right time. Ultimately, through reading books, attending seminars and receiving unconditional love and support from my wife, Youth Hoops Basketball Camps (YHBC) was founded.
Youth Hoops Basketball Camps had stabilized my family’s financial future, and remediated my potential feeling of being inadequate as a man!
